We are a community initiative focussed on educating the public about air quality in Jersey and the impact it can have on low mood and disengagement.
A recent study from the University of Oxford found evidence that exposure to air pollutants may lead to depression, anxiety, psychoses, and perhaps even neurocognitive disorders, such as dementia.
Historically, air quality monitoring in Jersey was undertaken by the Government of Jersey, but this was subject to limited resources.
We were established to provide real-time data on how polluted our environment can be and to make this data more accessible for all.
We place and maintain air quality monitoring systems across every parish on the Island to measure and report on a real-time basis air quality results. The monitoring systems are intended to help influence the community to make positive decisions about their vehicle use. The data collected is then validated and made widely available for research purposes to start creating real and long-lasting positive change in Jersey.

We received a grant from Impact Jersey, a Government of Jersey grant scheme dedicated to funding projects that benefit the Island through the use of technology. This grant enabled us to purchase and install air quality monitors across the Island.
To do this, we partnered with Clarity, who run similar initiatives in over 85 cities around the world. This gives us access to an extensive on and off-island network to bring the right people, projects and technology together to bring positive change to Jersey.
We have been working closely with Government and in particular the Environment department to align our project with the Government’s own focus on air quality.
Clarity provide our air pollution monitoring equipment and advise on optimising our sensor network. Through their cloud-based data warehouse, we are able to become part of a global network, enabling us to compare our air quality with around a hundred other communities.
Impact Jersey was created to accelerate and strengthen Jersey’s technology ecosystem to support the island’s future economy, environmental ambitions and community goals. Breathe Jersey was one of seven successful applicants for Tranche 1 funding, enabling us to launch the island's first community-driven air pollution monitoring initiative.
Continuum are out Data & Analytics partner. They will allow us to have a data first approach.
